What type of reluctance does the use of graphic novels address?

Graphic novels can be helpful for both bored and struggling readers but graphic novels are not a way of "dumbing down" material for children. The books and resources we highlight on this site are well reviewed and credible works of non-fiction. The use of comic book style illustration and limited text provide a less intimidating and more visually engaging experience for those without an independent desire to read. It is helpful for reluctant readers to be able to follow characters and a plot line through a text instead of being presented with independent facts. Graphic novels give students struggling with reading comprehension a visual reference to both better understand the text, and remember it later on.
